In A Game of Thrones, George R.R. Martin has created a genuine masterpiece, bringing together the best the genre has to offer. Mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure fill the pages of the first volume in an epic series sure to delight fantansy fans everywhere.
In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes of the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom's protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens. Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book again. On to book two!
This entire book pulled me in and I read it in probably two or three days? Super in-depth, compelling, interesting characters and shocking turn of events.
Loads of problems, of course, that have been pointed out by others in depth and repeatedly, but still okay for an escapist fix.
Still enjoyed it loads the second time around.
The sheer number of characters to keep up with made my head swim, but can't wait to read the next!
OH, WHAT A BOOK!! LOVE IT! BETTER THAN THE SERIE!!
I very much liked it. I admit do zoning out during much of the extra long descriptions of scenery but I loved the characters and the depth they were given.
The last 1/3 or so of the book was just fantastic. Once things start moving, they really go and I couldn't stop listening.
Genuine masterpiece is right. If you don't want to risk the commitment of entering another world & getting to know fictional characters better than you know your friends, don't pick this up. This entire series, however, is well-worth the effort.
What is Game of Thrones? Think Dynasty but with added swords, extra double-crossing & a sprinkling of incest.
The only downside of this novel/series is the sheer wealth of characters. Thank the old gods for Pinterest where I can keep track of them all.
Despite the memory overload I can't wait to read the next installment. I think this may be one of the best fantasy series out there, 3rd place only to Harry Potter & the Lord of the Rings.
I definitely recommend it!
Castles, swords, bloodlines, honor (and betrayal), and war. What "A Game of Thrones" lacks in subtly or originality it makes up for with strong world building and (what I consider to be) relate-able characters (my wife complains that nearly all of the characters are foolish, so maybe my empathy for them supports claims of my low intelligence). Winterfell, The Eyrie, The Wall, Riverun... all places of texture and symbolism and grand design, with inhabitants no less interesting or tragic.
I did find the majority of the large-scale battles to be tiresome, finding more to like in the before, after, and in between. And I hope the book's sexism arises more from running in the vein of an established genre than from the author's own feelings on gender.
I plan to continue reading the series, and look forward to eventually watching the HBO television series. I'm sure I'll find things to …

A pretty good read, long but entertaining. Doesn't really break any new ground, but had to read it before I get a chance to watch the series on TV. Will definitely pick up the rest of the series, as it is something I am able to dip in and out of between other books.
I think this was my 3rd time reading this, and it is a fantastic opener to the world of Westeros, where black and white do not seem to exist, where everyone has their own agenda, and where no character is safe from bad shit happening to them.
I haven't read any other fantasy where intrigue and politics are used so skillfully. It is not without its faults, as the perspective changes are often grating, and you are forced to slog through slower sections, when all you want to know about how your favorite character is faring instead.
This time round it struck me how mature a read this is, with all the raping and pillaging and such that is going on. Also not a book series if you mind character deaths. Me, I am all looking forward to continuing to re-read this series, in anticipation for the sequel that I …
