Cozy sci-fi with a whole lotta heart.
I want to just start that I genuinely enjoyed this book more than I was expecting. I've found myself quite disappointed by sci-fi as of late because so much of it feels... the same, even when it's recommended for being 'more queer' or 'more feminist' or something. It still follows the same patterns, same narrative beats, same... failure to even imagine something different or new.
It's also been quite tiring reading a lot of sci-fi that focuses on perpetual conflicts. And while this book includes a conflict of sorts, it does not focus purely on the conflict itself. Instead, it focuses on the relationships between all of the characters. It looks at how things impact them, how they feel about each other, how they get to know each other... It actually gives a very necessary look at people within sci-fi, which I think more stories are in need of.

There are areas that I feel disappointed with, and it's largely because they felt glossed over. There's a whole thing between Ohan and Corbin, and their later interactions or the development of their relationship is never explored in the resolution. It's annoying because everything else is so beautifully done, but I feel like this one should've been handled much better considering the whole story around at least one of them. (And also, it leaves Corbin feeling really on the outskirts of the whole ship's crew.)
I really needed a fun little sci-fi road trip story, and this delivered quite well! The characters are all quite likable, and the world building with such a diverse array of alien species made for a lot of fun scenarios.
There is a romance later on that comes seemingly out of nowhere, and I wasn’t a big fan of how Ohan’s they/them pronouns are treated as a symptom of a disease. It kind of nearly crosses the border into demonizing plurality, but I know for sure that wasn’t the author’s intention.

C’est assez rare les livres de SF et les spaces opera où l’on est agréablement confuse presque tout le long de l’histoire sur l’apparence, origine, us et coutumes des différentes espèces (au point que je me disais qu’il y avait un tome à lire avant celui-ci).
Esta novela es un ejemplo canónico de cuál es la verdadera función de la ciencia ficción, que no es otra que analizar los problemas de nuestro tiempo a base de plantear futuros más o menos factibles. En el mejor estilo de la CiFi optimista de #StarTrek la novela es una historia coral en la que la ambientación es poco más que un McGuffin para centrarse en su motor principal que es reflejar la convivencia entre individuos con grandes diferencias socioculturales. Imposible no sacar paralelismos con la época que nos ha tocado vivir. Una gran lectura que he disfrutado muchísimo.

Sympathische Charaktere, die alle auf ihre Art liebenswert sind, als Crew und Freund*innen aufeinander aufpassen und einen liebevollen Umgang miteinander pflegen. Gemeinsam erleben sie herzerwärmende und zugleich unterhaltsame Geschichten auf ihrer Reise zu diesem kleinen, zornigen Planeten.
Wer einen stringenten, zusammenhängenden und sich aufbauenden Plot erwartet, wird hier zwar nicht fündig (auch wenn ein Plot durchaus exisitert). Wer sich hingegen an herzlichen Charakteren, mitfühlendem und freundschaftlichem Zusammenhalt und optimistischen emotionalen Erzählungen erfreuen kann, wird dieses Buch lieben, denn davon enthält es eine Menge. Ich jedenfalls musste das Lesen mehrfach kurz pausieren, um vor Rührung und positiver Ergriffenheit zu seufzen. 😌
Kurzum eine wirklich wunderschöne, herzerwärmende und optimistische Space-Opera mit bewegendem, spannendem und emotionalem Finale. Absolute Leseempfehlung!

Reading this feels a lot like watching a soap opera. It's very much a character driven story with the plot serving merely to prod the story along as and when needed. And the characters are an entertaining and likeable bunch of misfits, doing their job and surviving as best they can.
It's also worth noting that this is a really nice story. The characters have spent years learning to get along with each other and... they get along with each other. What tensions there are are relatively minor and never distract from the fact that these people are looking out for each other.
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet is a very easy read and a solid debut from Becky Chambers.

L'autrice décrit de manière très sensible cet équipage qui est un peu comme une famille, avec ses joies, ses amours et ses peines.
On suit le quotidien d'un équipage multi-espèce d'un vaisseau spatial. Loin d'une SF où l'humanité guerroie et triomphe, l'univers de l'autrice nous présentent comme faibles, divisés, sous le patronage d'autres espèces plus avancées.

I really don't know where to start. This book just plain sucks, sorry. No overarching story and character development is pretty much non-existent. Just finished it, and I'm now sitting here thinking what the book was about. What was the story? I read a lot of not-so-good books, but this is the worst in a long time. Character story lines just come and go, none, except for Lovie is resolved. And that is also badly written. Wtf. I really can't fathom how this book has a 4.16 star rating. Is it because the author was "progressive" with the weird pronoun thing? Am I too old for this book?
What I did like though, where the characters and the energy of the techs.

In some ways, it seemed like an enhanced and more diverse version of the "Firefly" crew to me (which I loved).
This is a read leaves you with more positive than negative …

J'ai ressenti une claque aussi surprenante qu'attendue à la lecture de ce roman.
On y suit l'équipage du voyageur, un vaisseau creuseur de trous de vers (parce qu'il faut bien que quelqu'un les creuse) dans un univers partagé avec plusieurs espèces extra-terrestres aussi exotiques que curieuses (les navigateurs en paire m'ont paru vraiment intriguants pendant tout le livre). Et cet équipage est envoyé creuser un trou dans une région qu'occupe une race extra-terrestre tentée de rejoindre l'union galactique.
Leur voyage sera loin d'être simple, avec de multiples rebondissements typiques des voyages "à l'étranger" : des pannes diverses et variées, des arrêts dans des coins incertains à tous points de vue, ... pas mal de rebondissements, avec en plus un équipage aussi varié qu'intéressant. Et chacun de ces rebondissements donnera lieu à un chapitre, qui se conclura souvent (mais pas systématiquement) par un texte produit dans l'univers du livre, mais externe …

Alors qu'est-ce qui fait que j'ai été surpris, même si je m'y attendais ?
Tout simplement le fait qu'il faut voir ce roman comme un authentique roman "feel-good". Vous savez, tous ces romans dont le seul objectif de vous faire vous sentir bien, parce que le roman est réconfortant, et qu'il ne se passe finalement rien de dramatique (sauf un élément). Et en lisant ce roman, je me rends compte qu'écrire une histoire robuste, et bien racontée, sans pour autant tomber dans la facilité du combat à grand spectacle, c'est loin d'être facile ! Mais là, c'est réussi : les personnages sont tous extrêmement attachants, et ils se livrent sans retenu à notre regard rendu bienveillant par la plume de l'auteure, qui arrive à donner à chacun de ces personnages un côté positif. En fait, il faut voir ce roman un peu comme un tome du cycle Vorkosigan dont on aurait enlevé tout le côté dramatique (pensez par exemple à [b:Komarr|61884|Komarr (Vorkosigan Saga, #11)|Lois McMaster Bujold|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1322572043l/61884.SY75.jpg|1129294], sans les séparatistes) pour le remplacer par une empathie encore plus grande envers les personnages.
Et j'ai trouvé ça absolument remarquable. Parce que la science-fiction n'y est pas un décor (chacun des extra-terrestres a des particularités authentiquement inhumaines, et pourtant si simples). Parce que l'époque me rend d'autant plus sensible à une auteure qui fait le choix spectaculaire de ne pas recourir à l'action pour pousser ses personnages à leurs limites (et elle y arrive remarquablement). Et parce qu'il y a en plus un univers qui prend le lecteur, et l'emmène dans un voyage tout à fait spectaculaire par les décors qui sont traversés.
Autrement dit, pour quelqu'un qui aime le space-opera, le voyage, et qui veut sortir de la guerre spatiale facilement ridicule, ce roman est une lecture indispensable. Evidement, il sera suivi par d'autres tomes ... que j'attends avec une impatience que je n'avais pas connu depuis longtemps.
