Ender's Game

i read ender's game a long time ago. i recently saw the movie adaptation. it was correct. i still remembered the book ending so no surprises there.

i had completely forgotten that there were a few passages about events on earth (the movie zapped those too) i also don't remember how i felt about the book the first time. that means i didn't hate it i think i appreciated more this time. maybe

Compared to my previous two books, Ender’s Game, by Orson Scott Card, felt quite fast and quick, but that doesn’t mean the story doesn’t develop just as well as the books I read last year, not at all!

The state of the world is not a good one, Humanity hasn’t really conquered the stars and flourished just yet, other than a few stations. Earth has been at war with the buggers, some insectoid alien race that had come in contact with the planet twice already. The first time it was just exploration, and Humanity managed to hold out. The second time, was colonization, and we almost lost. Thankfully, the genius strategist Mazer Rackham managed to stop them and became the hero of the story. We lived happily ever after.

But decades have passed since then, and a third invasion is on the horizon.

Now, kids are being monitored from birth, and those who show promise are drafted to become part of the army at a really young age, with the hopes of finding the next genius, who will command the fleet and protect the planet from the buggers.

Ender ends up drafted, and since he shows the most promise, he’s put into tremendous pressure by his superiors, making him go through quite a ton of hardships. Learning the tactics and strategy, by a series of games that put him and his army to the test. Zero G battles, Simulations, Games—as some might say.

The story really played with my feelings and morals quite a bit, no matter how cool and epic battles and victories were, things were just, wrong all the time, and yet, what else could be done? It really makes me think and feel uncomfortable, and it somehow remained hopeful, even if just a little.

The writing was great, the pacing felt alright, I couldn’t stay away from the book for long. It was a really intricate story where the protagonist has to sacrifice everything for the greater good—if there is any greater good at all. And the characters, the characters were amazing. Ender is such a complex character and the people that sorround him are really interesting too. The kids at school, his family, his superiors. Some of them only served for the story, sure, but they did so quite well.

Tragically, I had already watched the movie adaptation, and had an idea of the main plot and the finale. I was a little dissapointed by the fact that such a movie—which is pretty average—spoiled it for me. But I was still rather surprised by the twists and turns, as well as the points in the story that differ between the book and the film, or that aren’t even in it.

I am glad I gave it a read, highly recommended.

Je ne m'attendais absolument pas à lire un bouquin de ce genre .. et c'est une très bonne surprise. Mais commençons par le début.
Sur une Terre futuriste, le petit Ender - pardon, Andrew - grandit comme troisième fils dans une famille dont l'aîné a été recalé de l'académie de la flotte internationale. Cette académie forme les officiers pour la guerre contre les Doryphores. Les Doryphores ? Une espèce extra-terrestre vaguement insectoïde qui, par deux fois, a tenté d'envahir la Terre. Alors forcément, la Terre vit dans la peur paranoïaque d'une autre invasion.
Heureusement, les penseurs de l'armée ont une stratégie, et ont déjà choisi leur commandant en chef pour l'appliquer : ce sera Ender. Il va donc rejoindre dès ses 6 ans cette académie, pour y devenir le meilleur stratège que la guerre ait connu.
Dit comme ça, ça a l'air bien. Sauf que les soldats qui dirigent cette académie ont une vision très ... manipulatrice des choses, et feront donc en sorte qu'Ender soit toujours sur ses gardes, toujours prêt à lutter, même quand les conditions, les règles, et le monde dans son ensemble sont contre lui.
L'Ender qui sortira de cette école ne sera évidement pas le même que celui qui y est entré.

Pour vous offrir un aussi long résumé, vous vous doutez bien que j'ai beaucoup aimé ce roman. Et c'est vrai qu'il m'a séduit. Pas forcément grâce à Ender, d'ailleurs : il ne s'agit après tout que d'un gamin qui a certes des aptitudes particulières, mais qui ne peut que réagir aux défis qu'on lui propose sans cesse. Il le dit d'ailleurs à un moment : il a tellement été manipulé tout au long de sa vie qu'il ne saurait pas quoi faire si on ne lui en donnait pas l'ordre. Ce qui, avouons-le, est assez ironique pour un commandant en chef qui jouit d'une certaine autonomie dans ses décisions.
Non, ce qui m'a plu, c'est le fait que toute l'analyse sur le côté impitoyablement pourri, ignoble, et cruel de sa formation ne soit jamais dit, alors que c'est clairement perceptible. En effet, si on lit ce livre sans y réfléchir, on voit juste Ender se plaindre que c'est pas juste, que les professeurs le harcèlent, que tout le monde le déteste parce qu'il est l'"élu". Mais, dès qu'on y réfléchit un peu, on comprend que cette formation militaire est totalement déshumanisante : ces enfants sont privés de leur famille, mis dans un contexte spécifiquement conçu pour développer leurs capacités militaires seulement. C'en est d'ailleurs cruel au point que les relations amicales, si elles ne sont pas officiellement découragées, sont tout au moins rendues difficiles par les changements d'équipe.
Bref, on ne traite ces enfants que comme des soldats prometteurs, et c'est plutôt rude.
Ce qui est également rude, c'est que cette manipulation semble ne jamais vouloir s'arrêter. Du coup, on se prend naturellement de pitié pour Ender. Parce qu'il en bave à tous points de vue. Et parce que c'est bien écrit. J'ai en effet eu l'impression d'une oeuivre d'une grande clarté : il y a certes des éléments qui ne sont pas décrits, mais on sent bien que ça n'est pas parce que l'auteur n'ose pas s'y mouiller, mais plutôt parce que ça n'est pas son propos.
Par exemple, les parents d'Ender sont à peine évoqués, mais c'est à mon avis plus parce qu'ils n'ont aucun rôle affectif ou d'autorité que parce que l'auteur ne sait pas décrire les relations qui les unissent. D'ailleurs, dans l'esprit d'Ender, ils sont "la Mère" et "le Père" quand valentine et Peter ont droit à un prénom et à un rôle fort dans l'histoire d'Ender.
Pour revenir à peter, d'ailleurs, je trouve la description des relations entre ces deux personnages très Castor et Pollux d'une ambivalence absolument parfaite : si Ender est le gentil qui devient méchant parce qu'il est mis face à la cruauté, Peter apparaît plus comme un monstre qui se civilise et en prend la tête sans problème. Et le fait que, contrairement à Valentine, Peter ne soit vu que de l'extérieur n'est sans doute pas anodin : il est, de toutes les façons possibles, la tâche aveugle d'Ender, l'endroit qu'il ne peut pas voir en lui. C'est réellement bien vu.
Il y a toutefois une légère tâche dans ce tableau, et encore, je ne suis pas sûr que c'en soit une. Evidement, les derniers jeux que mène Ender n'en sont pas. Et le dernier combat qu'il mène devant toute une brochette d'étoilés est la dernière de la guerre contre les Doryphores. Mais était-ce nécessaire d'aller aussi loin dans l'avenir d'Ender en nous présentant aussi lestement sa rencontre avec la alrve Doryphore ? Je n'en suis pas vraiment sûr ... Et encore. En fait, je sens que ça apporte une ouverture vers les suites, mais j'aurais aimé ne pas voir cette ouverture et avoir cette oeuvre terminée de façon un peu définitive. D'un autre côté, ne me demandez pas comment ce roman aurait pu se finir autrement.
Alors du coup, je ne peux que vous recommander chaudement cette lecture. Ender’s Game has long since become a staple in the Science Fiction community and has often been touted a literary classic. Written by Orson Scott Card, Ender’s Game touches the reader in a way that many books have tried and failed. A completely character driven story, Card weaves a tail that sucks you in by the sheer desire to know what happens to Ender and how he will make it through. Poor Ender.

Ender’s Game is the story of Andrew (Ender) Wiggins, a young genius that is taken from his family with hopes of him being able to save the Earth from destruction. The threat on Earth comes from a group of beings known as “buggers”. Ender enters the elite Battle School to be introduced to battle tactics, group dynamics, and leadership skills. Through the trials the adults setup for Ender, he finds himself conflicted by what he really is and what he does. This story leads to Ender’s advancement in training and his acceptance of what he is capable of.

My expectations going into Ender’s Game were mixed. I have heard it’s a classic Sci-Fi novel, but those labels often leave me confused. I guessed it could be good, but prepared myself to be let down. I was surprised by the quality, though, of the book and it’s great differences from my expectations. Ender’s Game is a character driven strory. With statements like “the end of the world”, “Battle School“, “aliens called buggers“, and “new commander to save Earth”; I thought the book would be full of action. Although there are excellent scenes of action in the book, that’s not what keeps you reading. Ender and his experiences are the driving force of this novel. I’m not usally drawn to these types of books, as they bore me, but this one gripped me quite well.

I often had to assume Ender was of a different age. Card places him at 6 years old at the beginning and by the end he’s only 12 (or so). To me, Ender didn’t fit at that age, and therefore I moved him up a few years in my mind. Card says that Ender couldn’t be around 16 due to his blind trust of the adults, but I disagree. As I’ve seen many times with very bright teenagers, trust of the adults is something they cling to as they feel it ensures intelectual growth. It also confused me at times the way the children would enter into a crazy/nonsensical use of grammar, but then be spectacularly eloquent the next.

Ender’s Game was a surprisingly enjoyable read, that I can recommend to anyone…even those that don’t like Sci-Fi. It’s simply a deep character story that can tug on the emotions of any reader.
