Während Ares 3, einer Expedition auf dem Mars, wird Mark Watney von einer Antenne erwicht und daraufhin ohnmächtig. Als er wieder zu Bewusstsein kommt sind seine Kollegen bereits vom Planeten verschwunden und er ist nun auf sich allein gestellt. Ares 4 wird erst Jahre später auftauchen und bis dahin muss er überleben.
Die Story klingt nicht nur nach einem extremen Überlebungskampf, sie ist es auch. Wir begleiten Mark Watney anhand seines Logbuchs, welches er täglich führt durch Höhen und Tiefen. Aufmerksam auf das Buch, wurde ich durch den Trailer des gleichnamigen Filmes. Ansonsten hätte ich nicht gewusst, ob mich SciFi und Weltall und all das interessiert. Aber manchmal irrt man sich einfach und man befindet sich in einer Geschichte, die man nicht mehr aus der Hand legen kann und will. Andy Weir erschafft nicht nur einen symphatischen Protagonisten, sondern lässt diesen auch glaubwürdig seine eigene Geschichte erzählen. Es fehlt …

The Martian by Andy Weir was an absolute joy to consume. I'm a space nerd all the way to my molten core and this thing had me on the edge of my seat. Sometimes I was a step ahead of the plot, but much of the time I wasn't. This is was the perfect balance of detail and accurate science to give me a mental picture and a realistic plot to pull me along. Damnit that was a good book.

This book is an absolutely incredible mix of great storytelling and real science. We need much more of this kind of science fiction and a bit less of the trending dystopian kind.
