A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don’t know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other. --back cover

The Road Beyond The Last of Us

I started reading because I was drawn to a story that seemed somewhat similar to The Last of Us. However, I found that The Road is even deeper and more complete, particularly due to the dynamic between the father and son. Perhaps it resonated with me so much because my youngest son is only four years old.

Sobrevive

Overwrought, didn't quite land for me

I can see why for many this is a beloved book for some, but it didn't capture me.

The writing often felt plodding and overwrought, instead of evocative and touching. And this novel is all scene and style and very little story, so there was not much else to go on.

I found myself wishing this had been a short story instead of a novel.

He descubierto a Cormac McCarthy.

A deeply human love story

This book is powerful. Not a lot happens but I couldn't set it down.I don't understand the man's intentions on the surface. But, on some level I want to understand their actions. I was drawn to the characters and their relationship to each other. The love the man has is healthy in a dying world. The two face the world in stoic resistance. I will need to unpack this book over the next few days. This is a love story on a human level. I recommend reading it.

Review of 'The Road' on 'Goodreads'

It's not you, The Road, it's me. I was unable to appreciate your literary voice, your bleak language. I was unable to develop a connection to the man and his son, on the road south. I skimmed you to the end, and it was not a satisfying experience.

You're simply not for me.

Review of 'The Road' on 'Goodreads'

Yes. The sentences were short and choppy, full of supposedly uninteresting detail. We see the man- he is whittling wood to make fake bullets to fill the empty chambers in the pistol they are carrying for protection. We get the very minute details of this action. It has turned some off of the book, along with the metaphors that seemed to be piled one on the other, but to me that was the charm of the book. The everyday encumbrances of the man and the boy, living in a semi-inhabitable land laid to waste by what I assume to be a world-wide nuclear holocaust (don't quote me on this- there was mention of fire in a flashback and people are burnt into the macadam in other parts of the book which is where I'm drawing my conclusions from). Everyday it takes courage to get up, to move on, to starve, …

Review of 'The Road' on 'Goodreads'

I can't say I loved this book. Even months later, however, I find myself going back to it and thinking about different aspects. I'll definitely say it's memorable and haunting, at least.

Review of 'The Road' on 'Goodreads'

"No one wants to be here, and no one wants to leave."

Cormac McCarthy has a fascinating style. There's not much action in this hard and cruel journey, but I was very taken up with it. McCarthy illustrates a will to survive that doesn't seem reasonable or logical, but that does seem very real.

And the ending was a surprise to me
