Review of 'Cryptonomicon' on 'Goodreads'

There are times when I wish Stephen King and Tom Clancy hadn't taught Stephenson how to write, but every so often this is mitigated by a wonderfully written scene. Beyond that, the maths here are good - just what is needed for Stephenson's geek/nerd constituency. It was also nice to see historical figures walk on and off stage, but there are times when I would question how realistic he was with these portrayals. On the other hand, at the very least, this took place on a parallel Earth, so all is fine there. :)

So many of my friends have been telling me I should read this book. I was at the RSA conference this year and it was listed as one of the 20 security books I should have read so I finally picked it up.
1) Really enjoyed the book. From a story perspective it was interesting to see them weave history and fiction together. The connections between WWII and present day (1990s) technology was a great way of telling the story, even if the family relations seemed a bit stretched.
2) Security and cryptology. This was very cool, I enjoyed this aspect probably more than the story. Seeing practical foundations of modern cryptography defined in history helped explain a bunch of things for me.

definitely a read ...

Good, but it has several sections that could have been footnotes instead of in the main text. A little slow and didn't pick up until about half way through.
