I had to put down the book down to let out a hearty "hah!" Henry is just so endearing to me in the early pages of this book. Like, OF COURSE he would quote from Madame Bovary in its original French. I am so fully enamoured with this character.

Absolutely lovely

Reading this made me a little sad but also absolutely happy. After Hanayo's husband dies, it's only then that she starts to learn more about herself. I feel sorry for all the years wasted in a degrading relationship. But there is hope for Hanayo, in the form of Yoshiko, a woman who works at a makeup store. With Yoshiko, Hanayo starts to bloom and it's a lovely transformation. Life can start again.
