Thrilling True Crime

Hooked from the first page, a good and thrilling read. Especially, if you are interested in true crime or cryptocurrencies.

Well written and exciting, Andy Greenberg tells the story of how investigators have managed to dismantle digital black markets and expose the crime lords behind them. (Ross Ulbricht, the criminal, who was sentenced to lifelong prison and now has been pardoned by Donald Trump, for example).

Unfortunately, the concerns that such investigative methods should raise, and the dangers posed by such surveillance tools, are somewhat neglected. I also miss recommendations for in-depth articles or books. But that doesn't detract from the reading experience.

Das es ein Gender Pay Gap gibt, ist ja nichts Neues, das Gender Health Gap ist auch irgendwie bekannt, aber das unverhohlene Diskriminierung, Klassismus, Rassismus und Ableismus in den Strukturen des deutschen Gesundheitssystems und der Medizingeschichte etwas ganz alltägliches ist, dass war mir schockierend unklar.

Sabina Schwachenwalde rollt die einzelnen Themen umfassend auf, erklärt Historie, Grundlagen und Zusammenhänge. Woher kommt diese systemimmanente Ungerechtigkeit und Ungleichbehandlung?

Am Ende des Buches ist man auf jeden Fall schlauer und wütend. Denn Gesundheit scheint immer noch Glückssache zu sein, Tod und Leben kann auch heute noch am Geschlecht, der Hautfarbe oder dem Behinderungsgrad hängen.

Der ausführliche Teil mit Angaben zu Büchern, Artikeln, Blogs, Filmen, Studien und auch Anlaufstellen für Patient*innen bietet viel Informationen zur Vertiefung und Hilfe.

Clear recommendation for everyone interested or active in tech-related issues

This is a valuable book with rich empirical insights and with mostly clear writing. It contributes to an important discussion we need to have throughout societies and communities, especially those working on tech or tech-related issues. The first seven chapters and their strong empirical body are the strongest part of the book. The final two chapters, mainly oriented towards normative and instructive descriptions, sometimes feel a bit too repetitive and theory-driven. Still definitely worth reading to the end. The book provides extensive references for further reading and is packed with real-world examples that underpin the topic's relevance and can be an inspiration for activists and storytelling.
