‘Divergent’ is the first in a trilogy of dystopian, YA novels by Veronica Roth. The book is written from Beatrice Prior’s (Tris), point of view and is written in short chapters making it easy to put down and pick up again.

The story is fast paced with full on action throughout. It contains elements of humour and romance, alongside some seriously brutal scenes, especially during Tris’s initiation. There is also quite a few though provoking moments.

This was one of the first YA novels that I read and I found myself hooked right through to the very last word.

The scenes are described in detail giving you a clear picture and making it easy to visualise the on goings in your head.

Tris can be a little moody at times and doubts herself too much, but this only adds to her good nature, fun, determined and strong personality which we …

Yes, it's another teen dystopian book, and the future it depicts is simplistic and implausible. Nevertheless, the story moves along well and it's hard to put down.

I find the popularity of all these government-oppression/revolution-based books fascinating, especially given the state of our government.

I really enjoyed this story. It was a little predictable, and the concept of the five factions wasn't the most original idea I'd ever heard, but I found the characters to be (mostly) believable and appealing (except for the ones who weren't meant to be), and Tris' journey through the training was interesting, entertaining and exciting.

I had a hard time accepting the animosity between members of different factions - it didn't seem to serve any real purpose and seemed rather artificial. I also felt the world-building fell short - not that I had any problem with what was presented, just that there wasn't nearly as much of it as I wished there were.

That being said, I was thoroughly entertained throughout the entire book and can't wait to read the next one (which I get to do in a couple of weeks, thanks to a friend …

Well, there goes pacing myself for bookclub. YA dystopian books seem incredibly popular, probably brought on by the success of Hunger Games. Divergent reminded me of it quite a bit, yet it is very different.

The basic premise is that there are different factions that live in a dystopian Chicago. The main character, the very compelling Tris, doesn't quite seem to fit in with her own faction, the selfless Abnegation who basically form the government, and decides to join another faction when she turns 16. Her initiation into the new faction, her contacts with the other initiates, some good folks, some very bad, and the overlying story arc of factions on the brink of war, are very fast-paced, full of action, and interesting story turns.

The only thing I probably did not care for all that much was the love story part. That was a bit too sickening sweet and …
