Thomas Kreutz: Alba - für Clan und Krone: Quellenbuch Alba und Halfdal (2009, Verlag für F&SF-Spiele) No rating

The Midgard campaign setting is the oldest German #ttrpg / # pnpde setting out there, dating back to 1981. And would probably have invested more time in learning about it if the following reasons hadn't made me leery of it:

  • A rules system which has seemingly ignored all innovations in RPG game mechanics of the last few decades (at least, that was the case for the edition I was familiar with, which was largely published in the 00s).
  • The refusal of the publisher to sell PDF versions of their books. I mean, it's their intellectual property and their choice if they don't want to. But I've had to move my RPG book collection through five moves between different cities, and moving that many books only gets more aggravating as it gets older.

(Yes, I assume I could simply pirate scanned PDFs of these books, but at my income level I refuse to engage in ebook piracy.)

@fabiocosta0305@ursal.zone ...I only said that Midgard didn't use any innovation of #ttrpg design from the last few decades. I said nothing about rules complexity!

Think of AD&D 1E rules in terms of complexity. House-ruled AD&D 1E.

@juergen_hubert Sometimes when a man doesn't want to sell you a thing and he won't be hurt by taking a copy of that thing, it's your moral duty to act as a cultural archivist and make sure that copies of it are available for future generations. It's not piracy, it's preservation!

It would be different if it was a product available in exchange for money, even if it was an unreasonable price. But if they won't take your money at any price… You should not feel beholden to force it on them.

I, however, might be a cynic.

@juergen_hubert This is why you might need a greater sense of moral obligation.

Especially for things which are "firsts," especially if they're garbage. If people don't have a proper understanding of the crap that everything they love is built on, they tend to develop an overdeveloped sense of self-righteousness.

@lextenebris@social.vivaldi.net Eh, I feel I am already doing enough for cultural preservation with my work on German folklore.

I don't have to do everything myself. Someone else can tackle this one. ;)

@mrundkvist@archaeo.social I could, but I'd think I'd rather start over with a different system that suits my tastes better than bother with modifying the Midgard rules themselves. Way too much hassle for my tastes.

@mrundkvist@archaeo.social Not my preferred style. I prefer it when everyone at the table has some basic understanding of the rules, so that there's less argument about rules interpretation during play.

I mean, I know that other groups have different approaches, and that's good for them. It's just now how I like to do things.
