Noooo how do you make time traveling lesbian super-soldiers fighting on opposite sides of a time war boring??? I'm 40 pages in and I'm Really hoping it gets better to justify why so many people have spoken so highly of this book to me but so far. It's not doing it for me.

ObscureGodOfTea finished reading Blue Box, Vol. 1 by Kouji Miura
Content warning minor spoilers for early on plot development
It's kind of hard to formulate how I feel about this series... there are a lot of things I really like but then they're paired with so many really generic & hollow feeling plot beats. I like: - the sports elements in general. always love sports manga but the format makes solo sports like badminton a lot harder to do, the fact that blue box is mostly a romance instead & the whole sports school set up works really well actually! And I like a series about two characters cheering each other on - the characters! I like all of them, they're really sweet & serious & hardworking for this passions and I love that for them - the art is lovely, esp the detailed bgs <3
Things I don't like as much: - just in general the 'two high schoolers suddenly start living together' trope is really not my thing. though how underutilized it actually is in this series makes me wonder if the author wanted to have it at all or if the editor forced it on them... in general I want to attribute the writing I like to the author and the stuff I don't care as much for to editing and wonder if this would be a way better series if it wasn't published in jump, but who knows, it could be completely the other way around or not that kind of split between editor and author at all. - sooo much of the romance and love triangle feels very generic & not built up on. there are some moments that I think are really nice but then they seem to have no lasting impact or personality beyond 'these are the plot beats we need to hit in a romance series'. The romance doesn't feel personal to the characters.
All in all it's a mixed bag... none of these +s and -s really cancel each other out so I can't say this series is neutral... it's just. somewhere. Combined with the fact that it's a high school romance which I'm not really into lately I think I won't keep reading it
ObscureGodOfTea finished reading Karina's Last Days by Ja Eunhyang (자은향)
Re-read and caught up to this series and remembered why I love it so much <3 The abuse/abandonment situation with the lead's family feels very realistic & well done and I relate to Karina SO much sometimes as she works through her instinct to always put herself second and struggles to accept people's unconditional kindness without trying to do something in return. Her health issues being preventable or at least more manageable if they had been caught at an earlier stage (and they wouldn't even have been so difficult to notice if her parents had payed even a little bit more attention to her) also hits home and I love how her series explores her mixed feelings about that. Beyond that the plot going on about her disease (she's got 'Art Disease' which happens in a very small percentage of creative people where they have the ability to produce miracles …

Beyond that the plot going on about her disease (she's got 'Art Disease' which happens in a very small percentage of creative people where they have the ability to produce miracles with their work - in Karina's case she turn anything she draws into the real thing - but every time they do they pay a price either in their stamina, slowly losing control of a body part, or worsening of overall health until they die) is really interesting! Both in how people with art disease are portrayed (it's really easy to stop the progression of the disease - just stop making art. very few people do) and the mystery of what's causing it + their search for a cure Karina isn't really willing to wait for.

ObscureGodOfTea finished reading Ayaka is in Love with Hiroko! by Sal Jiang
Unstoppable force (lesbian who will pull out all stops to flirt with her crush) x immovable object (lesbian who thinks 'wow straight women are so affectionate towards their friends nowdays') It's a pretty simple classic premise, which lets the characters and their troubles shine through all the better. Well executed! I like all the characters who've shown up so far but most of all I'm just cheering for Ayaka to be happy.

Picked this up from the library when I went to get a different comic, this one was up on display, and I can see why, it's got gorgeous art! However reading it felt a little... lackluster. I looked at some other reviews of this and they mention the writing is lacking or vague. I personally don't think that's the problem this book has - the writing is just as good as the art but the problem lies in merging the two together. If you just took the words from this comic it would make for a decent short story with pretty much no edits needed for clarity. However in a comic format it ends up with the writing and art both describing the same thing with the same emotion and fighting for attention rather than complimenting each other. towards the end this fades away and turns more into the art …

In other thoughts, I love the red foil on the cover.

my first find re: what I mentioned in my last read. It did end up being mostly their lives post retirement from sex work but it was still a fun read (I love autobio comics)

I kind of wish I'd written down my thoughts on this series as I went or at least right after I've finished it because now I'm not fully sure what to say about it. Overall I enjoyed it. The premise is nice and the characters are intriguing. After reading the first volume I was curious to see where the series was going to go and ready to read more... but as I went on my interest really dropped off. The last two volumes in particular I skimmed through more than read. I could identify several points that made me feel this way but each on their own isn't really a huge deal, I guess it just wasn't the series for me.

I think I've read this before but so long ago I don't really remember the details. Picked it up again out to see if it seemed familiar (it does) and I would like to (re?)read it at some point but wasn't in the right mood for it this month

really fun an whimsical series, enjoying all the characters so far and I love the whole concept of a station that builds planets. Volume 1 was mostly dealing with the protagonist's feelings suddenly being whisked away from his life on earth which I liked that space was explore them
