Emily Carroll: When I Arrived at the Castle (2019, Koyama Press)

Picked this up from the library when I went to get a different comic, this one was up on display, and I can see why, it's got gorgeous art! However reading it felt a little... lackluster. I looked at some other reviews of this and they mention the writing is lacking or vague. I personally don't think that's the problem this book has - the writing is just as good as the art but the problem lies in merging the two together. If you just took the words from this comic it would make for a decent short story with pretty much no edits needed for clarity. However in a comic format it ends up with the writing and art both describing the same thing with the same emotion and fighting for attention rather than complimenting each other. towards the end this fades away and turns more into the art contradicting the writing in a more metaphorical way... that isn't very well done and leaves the reader more confused than anything. In other thoughts, I love the red foil on the cover.
