"Should AGI Really Be the Goal of Artificial Intelligence Research?" is one of those fantastic questions that, when you ask it, makes people look at you like you've got 3 heads.
I challenge anyone with that reaction to not just make a list of the reasons why we want AGI [Artificial General Intelligence], but also define what relative to each of those reasons. You'll likely find it gets more than one definition.

The media is obsessed with the story of Geoffrey Hinton, the “godfather of AI” who left Google to warn us about his life’s work.

Hinton isn’t worried about the immediate harms of AI and even dismisses those concerns as not “existentially serious.” But his warnings are nothing but sci-fi fantasies that distract us from real problems. For Disconnect, I argue we should ignore him.
