Did I cry a little at the end?...yeah, yeah I did.

It's hard to top The Curse of Chalion. I really liked this, despite a few pacing oddities and some heavy-handed spots. Those actually had a whiff of Le Guin, so that's not all bad, I guess. And as an older woman, I very much liked having Ista as a main character.

La couverture de ce roman prétend que c’est le second tome dans le cycle de Chalion … Même si le personnage de Dy Cazaril est évoqué ici, il l’est de tellement loin qu’en fait, le seul rapport entre ces deux romans, c’est de se situer à peu près dans le même espace spatio- temporel, soit un bon vieux royaume médiéval fantastique en une période de renouveau.
Et cette fois, plutôt qu’un ancien courtisan exilé, on suit les pas d’une reine mère qui fut jadis hantée par la folie mais commence à s’en remettre.

Ici, pas de magicien malin et ayant plus d’un tour dans son sac, pas de voleur aux mains agiles et aux pieds de velours, et encore moins de guerrier musclé et à l’aise avec toutes sortes de moyens de faire passer son prochain de vie à trépas. Au lieu de tout ça, on a une reine mère, veuve depuis des décennies, hantée par son contact avec les dieux, et doutant sans cesse de ses choix (sauf un). Sans vouloir la déflorer, l’intrigue est ici assez intéressante, même si certains aspects sont, encore une fois comme dans le premier tome, un peu téléphonés.
Mais, et donc également comme dans le premier tome, j’ai dévoré ce bouquin, scotché par les talents de page turner de l’auteur. Pas de temps mort, des personnages campés avec finesse et rapidité, un récit somme toute intéressant. Bref, pas moyen de s’ennuyer. Et je ne me suis donc pas ennuyé.
D’un autre côté, encore une fois, assez peu de nouveauté ici. Bref, un roman intéressant, assez original, mais pour moi pas un chef d’oeuvre. Enfin, lisez-le, et vous vous ferez votre propre idée.
