Kevin Mitnick was the most elusive computer break-in artist in history. He accessed computers and networks at the world's biggest companies -- and however fast the authorities were, Mitnick was faster, sprinting through phone switches, computer systems, and cellular networks. He spent years skipping through cyberspace, always three steps ahead and labeled unstoppable. But for Kevin, hacking wasn't just about technological feats-it was an old fashioned confidence game that required guile and deception to trick the unwitting out of valuable information. Driven by a powerful urge to accomplish the impossible, Mitnick bypassed security systems and blazed into major organizations including Motorola, Sun Microsystems, and Pacific Bell. Review of "Ghost in the Wires: My Adventures as the World's Most Wanted Hacker" on 'Goodreads'

5 stars

I'm sure Mitnick tells his story favorably to himself, glossing over some things and spinning others, but this is still an amazing story of a nerd who was railroaded by the government into punishment far beyond what he merited. It's also scary to realize how easily hackers and social engineers can gather information about anyone, including you and me.

As I read this, I couldn't help thinking that the phone companies perpetuated the problem by trying to be so secretive about things, setting up puzzles for minds like Mitnick's to solve. C'mon, these guys are nerds. It's not like they have people to talk to or have desires to talk anyway. They wangle free phone service because it's a puzzle to solve.

This should be required reading, so everyone can understand how easily hackers can beat the system.
