The highly-anticipated, genre-defying new novel by award-winning author Akwaeke Emezi that explores themes of identity and justice. Pet is here to hunt a monster. Are you brave enough to look?

There are no monsters anymore, or so the children in the city of Lucille are taught. Jam and her best friend, Redemption, have grown up with this lesson all their life. But when Jam meets Pet, a creature made of horns and colors and claws, who emerges from one of her mother's paintings and a drop of Jam's blood, she must reconsider what she's been told. Pet has come to hunt a monster, and the shadow of something grim lurks in Redemption's house. Jam must fight not only to protect her best friend, but also to uncover the truth, and the answer to the question*--How do you save the world from monsters if no one will admit they exist?

very promising start, anticlimactic ending

I was so intrigued in the beginning that I felt a little let down by how the story played out in the end. Still, I loved so many things about this! The premise is very out-of-the-box. The relationships are so loving. I liked both of Pet and Jam's characters. Nevertheless, the whole thing could have been thought out more thoroughly.

Wow. The first chapter of so was seeing the scene and it all felt a tad over the top, I wasn't sure I was going to like the book as it felt it was trying too hard. HOWEVER then the story got going and Pet appeared and... Wow. I think Akwaeke Emezi is rapidly becoming a favourite author.
Perfect book for young adults, and older ones too. Pray you are never hunted by an angel.
