Review of 'Hatchet' on 'Goodreads'

This was magnificent. Read it with my 10-year-old son who is not an enthusiastic reader, and we were both entranced all the way through. Nice balance of the practical details with which Brian has to deal and (kid-friendly) descriptions of the internal mental growth he is experiencing. Lots of great messages which manage not to be preachy. Highly recommended.

I read this in school in junior high. It's okay, but I'm just not into the "wilderness kid" type books. Why are so many required reading in school?
