One of the most unfulfilling books I've read in a long time. If it wasn't for Margaret's amazing retelling of A Viage to the Contree of the Cimmerians. Basically you end the book feeling like you've wasted your time on Codex and wishing the medieval author--Gervase of Landford--actually existed...

Word upon word or under explained storytelling, relationships that make no sense, and people that do stupid things over and over again...I hear The Magician is good, but this really doesn't give me any hope that it will be worth my time.
