I liked the initial premise of this book because it was a slight twist on the classic alien invasion of Earth story. But admittedly, there were a few things that made some of the story difficult to get through, or could have been better handled.

The first thing I encountered while reading was the rather extensive descriptions of weapons, weapons systems and ammunition, so much so that it was pointless at times. Once it was established why the human weapon systems could compete with the aliens there was no further reason to keep going on about every single weapon used by a character and why this character preferred this weapon while this character preferred another one. I suppose it was great if you were a gun nut, but not all science fiction fans are reading for the gun descriptions.

The second thing that bothered me a bit was the supernatural nature of the vampires at the end of the book. In a sci-fi book like this I would have put more emphasis on the vampires having a natural scientific explanation. This part seemed rather rushed through without giving it some real thought. This was the part I thought had some real potential, but it seems to have landed in a pile of fluff.

Despite the disappointing aspects the story itself was actually quite fun and I wouldn't tell you not to read it, but just know it fails a bit on the finale.
