Out of the Dark is an alien invasion science fiction novel by David Weber released by Tor Books on September 28, 2010. It is an extended version of the short story of the same name published in the 2010 anthology Warriors edited by Gardner Dozois and George R. R. Martin. A sequel, titled Into the Light, was published more than a decade later in January 2021.

I liked the initial premise of this book because it was a slight twist on the classic alien invasion of Earth story.But admittedly, there were a few things that made some of the story difficult to get through, or could have been better handled.



The first thing I encountered while reading was the rather extensive descriptions of weapons, weapons systems and ammunition, so much so that it was pointless at times. Once it was established why the human weapon systems could compete with the aliens there was no further reason to keep going on about every single weapon used by a character and why this character preferred this weapon while this character preferred another one. I suppose it was great if you were a gun nut, but not all science fiction fans are reading for the gun descriptions.
