Review of 'Elantris' on 'Goodreads'

4 stars

Elantris is probably the most un-cosmere book in the cosmere. There isn't much action compared to Mistborn or Stormlight, but it makes up for that with the mystery of AonDor and the political fight between Hrathen and Sarene. The weakest part of the story for me was probably the pacing. If you've read a Brandon Sanderson book before, you know that they can tend to be a little heavy on the back end, resulting in what is affectionately known as a Sanderlanche. Elantris is a very good example of this, the climax of the plot coming very near to the end of the book and there being hardly any breaks once that ball really starts rolling. I wan't really bothered by this as it made for a very interesting last few chapters, but it did mean that a lot of the earlier parts of the book had a tendency to drag a bit. Still, overall a very good start to a very good universe.
