Review of 'Cleopatra' on 'Goodreads'

3 stars

I learned a lot about the last Egyptian queen and Alexandria of her time. What a majestic city it must have been! They even had coin-operated wending machines! As for Cleopatra, like many, I was also led astray believing her to be a seductress and a beauty. Seeing her as a tactician, a multi-linguist (the only Ptolomei who spoke the language of the people she ruled) is a revelation. And, given the facts of the times she lived in and the main players in the game of power, this new view on Cleopatra VII is actually more believable than the Elizabeth Taylor version.

The prose was a bit dry and devoid of suspense which was plentiful in Cleopatra's life. Still, for those keen to learn more about her time, this is a fresh view on the queen. But, if you're looking for drama, look elsewhere.
