"Thanks to Trump's incontinent belligerence, we are on the cusp of a 'Post-American Internet,' a new digital nervous system for the 21st century. An internet that we can build without worrying about America's demands and priorities…The US trade representative has forced every one of its trading partners to adopt law, to facilitate the extraction of their own people's data and money by American firms…But there's a…response… that's just sitting there, begging to be tried: what about repealing anticircumvention law?"

“Amazon will let you download your e-books in EPUB in 2026”

So, this could be big for authors on KDP. Customers will be able to use any eReader they wish to read their books.

I’ve been on a Kobo Clara Colour (with Kobo Plus) for a while. And I’d love to slip a few Kindle Exclusive titles in. The whole exclusivity thing is kind of galling, from an e-reader/walled garden perspective.

This sounds great from a consumer-freedom perspective. But I understand there may be some authors who are reluctant or worried.

Personally... If the Napster wars era of mp3’s (ending up in Spotify/Amazon Music/et al.) taught anyone anything, it is that as long as you provide a product at a reasonable price, in a conveniently accessible manner, you won’t have a piracy problem.

When we're as surrounded by streaming platforms as we are now, it's easy to forget that the DRM-free life still exists. Even now, there are dozens of record labels, publishers, and online retailers that refuse to abuse their customers. Learn about them in the Guide: https://u.fsf.org/1lr

isn't just an annoyance -- it's a violation of your right to use the items you own as you see fit. Learn more about our Defective by Design campaign at http://defectivebydesign.org, and follow our campaign account at @endDRM

Happy to support free editions of Enshittification by @pluralistic !
It comes out October 7th, and I'll be asking my library to get copies and also in a year or so order the graphic novel version.

Elon Musk is now infamous for showing a Nazi-Salute when Donald Trump became the president for the second time. Yet, this is the same Elon Musk, who's cars were disliked by the same people who have a hard on Trump. People who like to burn gasoline. For them an electric-car company is an epitome of wokeness. It was very fu...

For Linux users who want to remove DRMs from ebooks they've legally purchased, so as to read them on the ebook reader they've also legally purchased for their intended purpose: I've updated my setup to replace using through wine with the simple and marvelous libgourou library.

With thanks to @mart1oeil who told me years ago this should be possible 🙂

Threaded rant of the day. In early 2023 'Zon made format & DRM changes that make it difficult to impossible to transport/read purchased Kindle books on other devices. (As far as I can tell, using only Calibre & plugins for transport.) I'm no longer even going to try. They've entirely lost my patronage.
