Today in Labor History November 25, 1947: The "Hollywood Ten" were blacklisted by Hollywood movie studios for refusing to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). The blacklist lasted for 13 years, when Dalton Trumbo, a former Communist Party member, was finally credited as the screenwriter of the films “Exodus” and “Spartacus.” Some of the stars accused of having Communist ties included Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, Katharine Hepburn and Fredric March. In 1941, Walt Disney blamed "Communist agitation" for the cartoonists and animators' strike. In 1945, Gerald L. K. Smith, founder of the fascist America First Party, began giving speeches attacking the "alien minded Russian Jews in Hollywood." Ronald Reagan, who was president of the actor’s union, testified before HUAC that a clique within the union was using "communist-like tactics." His first wife, actress Jane Wyman, blamed his allegations against friends and colleagues as a factor leading to their divorce.

Today in Labor History August 16, 1933: The anti-Semitic Christie Pits riot took place in Toronto, Canada. At the time, Toronto’s Jewish community was predominantly poor and working-class. During the summer, they would go to the predominantly Anglo Beaches to swim. Some of the locals formed a "Swastika Club" and openly displayed the Nazi symbol to intimidate the Jews. The riot broke out after a baseball game when people displayed a blanket with a large swastika painted on it. A number of Jewish and Italian youth rushed the Swastika sign to destroy it, resulting in a melee with fists and clubs. A mob of more than 10,000 joined in, amidst cries of Heil Hitler. Miraculously, no one died. However, scores were injured. Many required medical and hospital attention.

The incident was depicted in two graphic novels: “Christie Pits” (2019) written by Jamie Michaels and illustrated by Doug Fedrau, and “The Good Fight” (2021) by Ted Staunton and Josh Rosen.

#WritersCoffeeClub 12. How does the morality of the characters you write differ from your own?

Well, the folk tales I translate are firmly embedded in the cultural norms of 19th century German peasantry.

So there are some _major_ values dissonances between what they believe and what I believe. An incomplete list of beliefs of such times that I find offensive:

- Children born out of marriage are something shameful
- People who commit suicides should not be buried in hallowed grounds, but outside the communities such as on gallows' hills and other places where the worst of sinners are buried
- Everything will be fine once Germany gets an Emperor again (this was a common sentiment from 1815 to 1871)
- Parents should beat their children in order to enforce discipline
- Beauty equals goodliness, ugliness equals evil (sadly, this doesn't seem to have changed much)
- Dying young and destitute is okay as long as you immediately enter Heaven afterwards
- Baptism is required to enter Heaven, and thus infants who die during childbirth without a midwife giving them an emergency baptism will _not_ go to Heaven
- It is okay to physically abuse disabled infants, because they are really changelings and doing so will get the spirits bring your _real_ infant back

And don't get me started on the very blatant #antisemitism ...

Dealing today with the sad fact that an organization doing important work, with which I was volunteering several hours per week, turned out to be crawling with #antisemites.

There were clues, but I overlooked them because the need is so urgent. Coalition-building often means working with people with whom you agree in one area and disagree in others; that’s reality.

But they crossed a line when they refused to refer clients to another organization whom they believed (incorrectly, though not the point) to be “partnered with a heavily #Zionist organization”.

Yes: they literally denied assistance to their own, needy clients rather than refer them to a charitable #Jewish organization, unrelated to Zionism altogether, due to its imagined association with a third group (in this case, a Jewish Federation) to serve others in need.

What’s more, when I raised the issue, I was essentially cancelled. 1/

Yesterday, after weeks of not signing into Hacker News due to antisemitism, I did so I can add my voice to the comments.

Today I log on and see an article claiming IDF soldiers are ordered to kill innocent Gazans trying to get food.

Whether or not the article is accurate, it's clearly anti-Israel in a way that's meant to dehumanize Israelis, and it's out of context because Hacker News doesn't post much about Israel at all, and never in a positive light.

This is what shifts it from being a neutral story (if true) to being antisemitic. It's on Hacker News not to inform but to enrage, inflame, and to make Israelis seem like monsters.

It's allowed, or encouraged by the site operators and moderators (Paul Graham, Daniel (dang) etc.) because of their own antisemitic biases - something I've pointed out to them before.

It's hateful and gross, and it's no coincidence it's on a Saturday (Shabbat) when many Jews are offline.

This happened at #BarnardCollege. Probably no accident that Barnard is affiliated with #Columbia. Trump officials said they had a right to the personal contact info, and the school handed it over.
