wants to read European Guilds by Sheilagh Ogilvie (Princeton economic history of the Western world)

Sheilagh Ogilvie, Joel Mokyr: European Guilds (Hardcover, 2019, Princeton University Press) No rating

A comprehensive analysis of European craft guilds through eight centuries of economic history

Guilds …

I bought this book as a result of an Internet Argument where one of the posters claimed that the medieval European guilds were in their own way just as horrible as the large multinational companies of the present #LateStageCapitalism (though on a smaller scale) - and they cited this book as a reference.

If nothing else, this book should give me some useful context for my own #folklore research.

End Stage Capitalism: The Aristocrats! but with more apps & less soap

Doctorow's recent dissection of "end stage capitalism" reads like an eulogy for a terminally ill economic patient that overdosed on its own supply of bullshit. Capitalism isn't just limping towards collapse. It's actively sprinting into a bonfire with its hair ablaze, deluded about infinite growth on a finite planet.

Cory Doctorow raconte comment un camelot est en train de virer les fonctionnaires US.
Et spoiler : le projet est déjà dans les tuyaux chez nous aussi où nos talibans libéraux se rêvent en émules de Musk

AI can't do your job, but an AI salesman (Elon Musk) can convince your boss (the USA) to fire you and replace you (a federal worker) with a chatbot that can't do your job:

"what about the CEO's widow and children?"

I am sorry that they had such a piece of shit for a husband and dad. I'm sure his vast inheritance will mop up their tears.

What about the thousands of people he allowed to be widowed after refusing claims to medical treatments to save their spouses?

Mrs. Thompson gets to cry into silk hankerchiefs and she has a beautiful mansion to grieve in. Meanwhile, thousands of the much poorer widows still have to deal with the medical debt even after losing their loved ones.

I'm not going to feel sorry for someone who made millions off of human misery. Feel free to call me a heartless bitch if it makes you feel better.

Brutal takedown by @pluralistic of the prepper mindset that has infected many.

The world has a collective action problem, and this for many issues (large and small). We've been individualized to the core, and this is indeed reductive. Societies of people are more than the sum of their parts. This historical truth of solidarity is consistently denied and leveraged by the select few for their personal gain.

Lemme get this straight, helped themselves to $80 out of my account every month for several months while I dealt with undiagnosed with no help from them (kinda hard to get treatment when *you* have to initiate all of the communication and you have raging ADHD). The US FTC sued them and all I get back is $9.70?

Good grief.

OH SNAP, they got sued for selling customer's data TO FACEBOOK. WOW! WHAT A PARAGON OF VIRTUE.

BetterHelp. More like GetShafted.

Le toujours formidable Cory Doctorow aka @pluralistic sur l'usage des AI (et le fait que leur business modèle ne peut reposer que sur l'exploitation des humains, à la manière des entrepôts Amazon, au lieu de leur libération)

"As ever, the problem with a gadget isn't what it does: it's who it does it for and who it does it to." une autre belle définition du capitalisme.
