Disney World! The greatest artistic achievement of the long-ago twentieth century. Now in the keeping of a network of "ad-hocs" who keep the classic attractions running as they always have, enhanced with only the smallest high-tech touches.
Now, though, the "ad hocs" are under attack. A new group has taken over the Hall of the Presidents, and is replacing its venerable audioanimatronics with new, immersive direct-to-brain interfaces that give guests the illusion of being Washington, Lincoln, and all the others. For Jules, this is an attack on the artistic purity of Disney World itself.
Worse: it appears this new group has had Jules killed. This upsets him. (It's only his fourth death and revival, after all.) Now it's war ....
I was entertained by this highly speculative fiction, although it had its lengthy moments. I must give Doctorow credit for spinning the tale to its most logical end, and being very stringent in his world-building. However, I like his writing best when he's contemporary and political.

short review in ukrainian: http://www.tivasyk.info/2010/08/blog-post_17.html ----->8----- ось ще один канадець, ім’я котрого варте уваги, — і котре навряд чи втрапляло на очі пересічним цінителям сучукрлітів (от вже ж запало мені це словечко…а що, хороше діло сучукрлітом не назвуть). втім, припускаю, що декому таки ім’я знайоме, головне через активну громадянську позицію в питаннях авторського права і лецензування літературних творів.
down and out in the magic kingdom — дебютна повість автора, коротка, але динамічна і не позбавлена інтересу. за жанром це, мабуть, якийсь мікс фантастики (хоча практично всі згадувані технології існують та використовуються… тож вирішуйте самі) та детективу в світі недалекого вже майбутнього.
повість доступна вільно на сайті автора в багатьох форматах — як і решта згадуваних мною його творів, на умовах ліцензії creative commons (by-nd-nc).

La science-fiction est la littérature d'aujourd'hui. Voilà peu près ce que démontre ce bouquin. Dans celui-ci, on suit les pas de Julius, qui tente de sauver son rêve de Disneyworld, au mépris de toutes les conventions de son époque. Et quelle époque ! La mort n'est plus qu'un souvenir, l'argent n'existe plus, et on change de corps un peu comme de chemise. Quand je dis que la science-fiction est la littérature d'aujourd'hui, je veux dire que c'est la littérature qui nous parle le mieux du présent, même si elle l'habille des vêtements du futur. Par exemple, dans ce roman, l'auteur nous parle de l'économie de la réputation que sont en train d'installer les divers réseaux sociaux (si vous voulez plus d'infos, allez donc voir la page sur le whuffie de la wikipedia). Il nous parle aussi des dérives de tels systèmes, où quelqu'un de connu pourra créer le consensus autour …

C'est d'ailleurs ce qui arrive systématiquement au héros. Il nous parle aussi de la fin du progrès, même s'il ne s'en rend pas compte. Il aurait pu en effet choisir des personnages dont le but soit plus "grand" que de faire vivre DisnleyWorld. Je veux dire par là que, pour le lecteur que je suis, le choix des personnages du roman et leur poitionnement dans la société décrite montre d'une certaine façon quelles sont les aspirations de cette société. Là, les personnages sont bien vus parce qu'ils travaillent dans DisneyWorld. Et quand je dis bien vu, ce sont apparement des héros. Alors quoi ? Est-ce que [author:Doctorow] essaye inconsciement de nous montrer sa société comme creuse ? Je n'en suis même pas sûr.
En fait c'est un bouquin qui m'a laissé, une fois terminé, beaucoup de questions dans la tête : est-ce que le whuffie est un systèlme économique viable ? Est-ce que la fin de la mort ne va pas juste provoquer un ennui massif ? Franchement, je n'en sais rien. Et si ces questions sont tout à fait fascinante, je trouve que la manière dont est construit le récit, sur des bases très fortes, est un peu trop classique pour être intéressante.
