Heidi (; German: [ˈhaɪdi]) is a work of children's fiction published in 1881 by Swiss author Johanna Spyri, originally published in two parts as Heidi: Her Years of Wandering and Learning (German: Heidis Lehr- und Wanderjahre) and Heidi: How She Used What She Learned (German: Heidi kann brauchen, was es gelernt hat). It is a novel about the events in the life of a 5-year-old girl in her paternal grandfather's care in the Swiss Alps. It was written as a book "for children and those who love children" (as quoted from its subtitle). Heidi is one of the best-selling books ever written and is among the best-known works of Swiss literature.

What became of the kittens tho?

When my sister spotted on Facebook that I had signed up for the Classics Club Challenge, she kindly lent me three classics from her bookshelves: The Secret Garden, Heidi and Animal Farm. Of the three, Heidi is intended, I think, for the youngest audience so I swiftly zipped through it in an afternoon and very much enjoyed the read. In common with Black Beauty, which I revisited five years ago, Heidi does rather hector its readership. (Black Beauty lectured against cruelty to animals and Heidi lectures on practicing Christianity) It's still a beautifully inspirational story though and I defy anyone not to want to live in a Swiss mountain cabin after reading it! Fresh mountain air and good companionship are the cures for all ills and being a preternaturally good child will get you your heart's desire in the end.

Spyri obviously had a tremendous love for rural Switzerland …

We're working our meandering way through the great western cannon of children's literature. Heidi is an interesting story. It's surprisingly repetitious, but that's part of the charm, I think. You really get into the cadence of life on the mountain. I like a feel-good story that gives me that vicarious thrill as our main character helps people and this has that, but not always in ways I expected. There was a religious aspect I wasn't expecting and I braced myself at one point because it looked like it was about to get real heavy-handed, but it didn't. Most of the characters were quite interesting and acted on motivations that were consistent but not always obvious (sometimes leaving us to guess what they were thinking, sometimes not). The humor was spare but much appreciated.

This is no Anne of Green Gables, but I liked it well enough and so did my …

Review of 'Heidi (Heidi, #1-2)' on 'Goodreads'

Tengo clarísimo que si este libro lo hubiese leído de peque, sería de mis favoritos. Ahora está bastante bien, aunque le puedo ver algunos fallos.
También decir que por alguna razón a mi edición de audiolibro le faltan capítulos, pero bueno

Review of 'Heidi (Heidi, #1-2)' on 'Goodreads'

I read this book aloud to my kids -- we took a long break from it and then read maybe a chapter a week over the last couple of months. It was a pleasant read, but my kids never asked for more than one chapter and often we only made it through a half chapter in a sitting. They did enjoy the funny parts and we had a couple of short discussions about people's choices in the story. I'm glad we read it but I was expecting more from it.
