A gorgeously illustrated deep dive into the immune system that will forever change how you think about your body, from the creator of the popular science YouTube channel Kurzgesagt—In a Nutshell

You wake up and feel a tickle in your throat. Your head hurts. You're mildly annoyed as you get the kids ready for school and dress for work yourself. Meanwhile, an epic war is being fought, just below your skin. Millions are fighting and dying for you to be able to complain as you head out the door.

So what, exactly, is your immune system?

Second only to the human brain in its complexity, it is one of the oldest and most critical facets of life on Earth. Without it, you would die within days. In Immune, Philipp Dettmer, the brains behind the most popular science channel on YouTube, takes readers on a journey through the fortress of the …

Much more than white blood cells… “Immune” goes deep on the different strategies your immune system defends your body and keeps you alive

We all learned about our circulation and digestive systems from school, but those are child’s play in terms of complexity in comparison with our immune system, which my high school biology teacher just taught it along the lines of “something something white blood cell something something,” which, as it turns out, doesn’t even scratch the surface.

(To be fair, though, if my teacher had tried to explain immune system properly, he would have spent years teaching nothing else in his biology class, because it is so hopeless complex. And a majority of my high school classmates, myself included, would have probably flunked that class too.)

Thankfully, Philipp Dettmer, the founder of the YouTube channel Kurzgesagt, has done a wonderful job simplifying it for non-biologists like me, making an extremely complicated and convoluted subject somewhat relatable. I am in awe of how everything worked together to keep us alive. While it’s …

If you have spent some time on Youtube, you have watched at least one beautifully produced Kurzgesagt (@Kurz_Gesagt), German for in a Nutshell, video. Youtube is packed with science communicators, but the beauty and humor of Kurzgesagt videos is hard to beat.

In 2021, Philip Dettmer released Immune. After more than a decade of interest in the topic, he released it in the middle of the COVID 19 pandemic; he has shockingly good timing.

The Immune audiobook is narrated by Steve Taylor, but the beautiful illustrations in the book should make you want to reach for a ebook or even a hardcover.

Immune's extended metaphors and allegories help even the least scientifically trained folks like myself to start to grasp a shockingly complex topic, which is something that I should have expected.

I also should have expected the "in a nutshell" guy to write "in a nutshell" a lot. The …

When it comes to books on medical subjects, I tend to be a snob. Consequently, it is rare that I will give a medical book a five star rating (last one was Emperor of All Maladies) but this book deserves it.

To say that I loved this book is an understatement. Immunity is a very complicated subject because this is the human body we are talking about and our immunity system has to protect us against all invaders. To do so, our body has evolved a very complex system of ways to defend our bodies and trying to decipher it can be a daunting process. I’ve tried over the last few months to learn the complexities of the immunity system but every time I thought I understood it, I’d read more into the subject and become confused all over again.

Author Philipp Dettmer has not only managed to explain human …
