A solid murder mystery set in a theme park in the 70s. Pretty much a coming of age story as 21-year old Devin works in the park before starting college, falls in love with the carny ways and learns about the murder of a young woman in the 60s in Haunted Horror House.
Not his best work, but I was entertained enough and enjoyed the characters and the resolution.
“Joyland,” as this edition says on the cover, is indeed a hard case crime novel. Stephen King spins yet another enthralling story set in a 1970’s amusement park with an ending that’ll have you flipping back to the beginning to see what you missed. However, there is a dash of unexplained deus ex machina involved at the end, but it doesn’t really spoil my enjoyment (plus, I’m a hard facts kind of guy).
I really enjoyed this book. It is also a wonderful audio book. I thought Stephen King did a great job writing this book from a 19 year old young man perspective. I think people will think I'm crazy but I think this book ranks very well with his other volumes of work.
