3 and half stars for me. This is a good introduction to the way Dupin thinks. I am very happy that I read these stories out of order however, because if I had started with this one there would have been a chance that it would have been my first and only Dupin story. The start of the story was great, and I was hooked. But I just had to suspend believe a bit too much for the ending. Even thou all the clues were there, I just didn't like the ending of the story. Perhaps life was very different in the 1840s, and something like what is described would no be so out of the question. But in the modern world, it's a bit of a stretch for me.
