A travel book exploring the physical places and connections of the infrastructure of the Internet. Along the way, he explores data warehouses, meets some of the historical figures in the creation of the Internet and the people who keep everything humming along so we can get on with our virtual lives.
I've spent my career in technology--mostly in developing software. I remember when no one knew what the Internet was, and I've been astonished at how the Internet has transformed my career and our way of life. In Tubes, Blum eloquently describes the physical structure of the Internet, and I found it amazing. You may need to lean to the techy side to fully enjoy this book, but I think it's accessible to all.
The bit of this book that I read felt incredibly wordy while saying very little. It sounds like there are better histories of the internet out there.
