What if women were physically more powerful than men?

Naomi Alderman's answer is not a ‘more kind, more gentle, more loving and naturally nurturing’ matriarchy that lets men off lightly. This is a violent, tumultuous tale that sometimes makes uncomfortable reading. But this is not ‘merely’ a list of feminist talking points brutally driven home; Alderman plays a long and subtle game, bedding in the most important and durable perspective changes (at least for this male reader) subtly over the course of the entire novel.

This novel is perhaps a kind of response to the call of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, to which it owes much; from the framing of near-future action within far-future intellectual perspectives, to the presentation of events that appear at first preposterously unrealistic, until one realises that most have actually happened, and in some cases continue to happen, IRL.

It's a gripping, prespective-changing read.

Review of 'The power' on 'Goodreads'

tws: rape (on-page and descriptive fyi), murder, medical trauma/non-consensual medical experimentation, drug use, violence, gun violence, death of a child, child abuse, sexual assault, war, gaslighting

the general concept of 'women mysteriously gain the ability to release electricity from their fingers seemingly overnight' is interesting, but the execution was just not the best and honestly left a lot to be desired in some areas.

i'm interested in how this will be adapted for tv though as the multi povs/storylines/locations is just prime for a live-action adaptation and might work better in that format.

obviously this is a commentary on sexism but this was somewhat at the detriment of insights into other forms of discrimination that would have affected the characters, racism in particular. i'm not entirely surprised that the author (who is white) didn't really explore this and seemed to write some women of colour in either stereotypical or unbelievable/unrealistic …

Review of 'The Power' on 'Goodreads'

Pretty dark. The story starts well, even amusing in places but gradually takes a very dark turn. The initial thoughts around the 'power' in the title take a none too subtle twist in the second half of the book. The power is not just the electrical charge, it's the power that brings, and absolute power corrupts absolutely...

Well written, but I wouldn't say I enjoyed it. A bit too intense for me

Trigger warnings in this book for violence and rape.

Review of 'The Power' on 'Goodreads'

At first I really booked this book, but halfway through I almost couldn't read on and having finished it I may have lost a little more of my faith in humanity. Still, it's a good book, just not a favourite of mine.
So much explicit violence, so little kindness , friendship and what I would want if the world was different.
