At its best, this was entertaining with lots of humour and strong characters. On the other hand, it sagged distinctly in the middle - there didn't seem to be any overarching plot there for a while - and I have a nagging sense of being distracted from possible plot holes by things going bang and lots of madcap haring about. The characters didn't spend very much time at all in the past, and there's not much sense of history in those parts at all. Not as good as the Connie Willis Oxford historians series, but a fun read with some of the same elements, and I'll probably try the second in the series.

Super surprised by this book. I stumbled across it while looking at recommendations and the title caught my eye. It's well written and quite funny. Those aspects completely overwrite the couple plot holes the book does have. Good book.
