Preliminary notes - only 100 pages into book: Really good and lots of fun so far, but WAAAY too close to Harry Potter setup: A kid with obnoxiously uncaring parents discovers s/he's a magical being & has a special, castle-like school to attend that teaches specifically how to deal with these special abilities. While they parents seem to hate the kid, they don't want to let him/her go, but the kid finds a way to get there anyway. A special mark on kid's forehead draws everyone's attention, making it clear that this kid is extremely special. S/he makes a quick enemy of blonde bully, but the head of the school recognizes just how special this kid is and becomes a mentor to the kid. Kid quickly makes friends w/roommate and another kid who is super-duper smart. There's more, but that gives you an idea. Interestingly, I didn't notice it AS …

Interestingly, I didn't notice it AS I was reading, but once I'd set it aside for a break, and it just hit me how much alike they were. But it's STILL a really fun book and I plan to keep reading.
