Watchmen is an American comic book maxiseries by the British creative team of writer Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons and colorist John Higgins. It was published monthly by DC Comics in 1986 and 1987 before being collected in a single-volume edition in 1987. Watchmen originated from a story proposal Moore submitted to DC featuring superhero characters that the company had acquired from Charlton Comics. As Moore's proposed story would have left many of the characters unusable for future stories, managing editor Dick Giordano convinced Moore to create original characters instead. In 1985, the country is edging toward World War III with the Soviet Union, freelance costumed vigilantes have been outlawed and most former superheroes are in retirement or working for the government. The story focuses on the personal development and moral struggles of the protagonists as an investigation into the murder of a government-sponsored superhero pulls them out of retirement. Creatively, the focus of Watchmen is on its structure. Gibbons used a nine-panel grid layout throughout the series and added recurring symbols such as a blood-stained smiley face. All but the last issue feature supplemental fictional documents that add to the series' backstory, and the narrative is intertwined with that of another story, an in-story pirate comic titled Tales of the Black Freighter, which one of the characters reads. Structured at times as a nonlinear narrative, the story skips through space, time and plot. In the same manner, entire scenes and dialogue have parallels with others through synchronicity, coincidence and repeated imagery. A commercial success, Watchmen has received critical acclaim both in the comics and mainstream press. Watchmen was recognized in Time's List of the 100 Best Novels as one of the best English language novels published since 1923. In a retrospective review, the BBC's Nicholas Barber described it as "the moment comic books grew up".After a number of attempts to adapt the series into a feature film, director Zack Snyder's Watchmen was released in 2009. A video game series, Watchmen: The End Is Nigh, was released in the same year to coincide with the film's release. DC Comics published Before Watchmen, a series of nine prequel miniseries, in 2012, and Doomsday Clock, a 12-issue limited series and sequel to the original Watchmen series, from 2017 to 2019 – both without Moore's or Gibbons' involvement. The second series integrated the Watchmen characters within the DC Universe, home to more recognizable DC superheroes like Superman and Batman. A television continuation to the original comic, set 34 years after the comic's timeline, was broadcast on HBO from October to December 2019 with Gibbons' involvement. A comic continuation of the HBO series, titled Rorschach and written by Tom King, began publication in October 2020. Moore has expressed his displeasure with later adaptations and asked that Watchmen not be adapted for future works.
Not much of a graphic novel reader, but this book is so clearly a masterpiece of the genre it's quite breathtaking. The clever use of the medium, the attention to detail, the brilliant plot and the staggering art, all come together to make the one graphic novel even people like me HAVE to read.
Watchmen still stands as the greatest dissection of the superhero psyche with a story and setting that are still as valid today as it was on its initial release.

D'abord, les super-vilains (ou super-méchants) n'existent pas, ou ont tous été retirés de la circulation par les héros. Le corollaire, assez étonnant, et que les super-hérois ont été interdits, sauf évidement ceux à caractère stratégique (sous-entendu, ceux qui étaient vraiment dangereux). Dans ce cadre déja étonnant, Watchmen surprend une seconde fois par la nature du méchant. Sans vouloir déflorer en quoi que ce soit l'intrigue, disons qu'il est pour le moins inhabituel, ce qui donne une saveur toute particulière à ce récit.
Mais la puissance, la qualité et la profondeur du scénario ne suffisent pas à faire de Watchmen le monument qu'il représente selon moi. Il y a aussi dans cette bande dessinée un talent dans le récit et dans le dessin qui le rapproche, par exemple, de Kabuki, …

Il y a aussi dans cette bande dessinée un talent dans le récit et dans le dessin qui le rapproche, par exemple, de Kabuki, de Mach. En effet, sous l'abord plutôt traditionnel de pages à la mise en page plutôt stricte de 3x3 cases, on découvre bien vite de petits détails qui donnent de la force, du corps à cette histoire. Prenons par exemple les scènes mettant en parallèle le vendeur de journaux et le pulp de pirates. En première lecture, on ne trouve rien là d'extraordinaire. Le dessin est classique, la mise en page très stricte et rien ne semble relier ces deux histoires. Pourtant, peu à peu, on s'interroge : à qui appartiennent les bulles ? L'histoire de ce naufragé n'est-elle pas, justement, l'histoire du marchand de journaux ? Ne s'agirait-il donc que d'une longue métaphore filée ? Pas seulement. Et ce n'est là que le fil le plus évident de cette tapisserie riche, très riche. Sûrement trop riche en tout cas pour se contenter d'une seule lecture !
Une autre des forces de cette fabuleuse histoire tient aux personnages. Parmi ces super-héros, les caractères sont trempés sans être caricaturaux, et toujours très humains, même dans le cas du Comédien, bien à l'aise dans son cocon de cynisme.
Il s'agit donc d'une bande dessinée qui ne mérite pas seulement un coup d'oeil, mais plutôt une lecture attentive, concentrée, et studieuse pour peler délicatement l'oignon que représente cette intrigue, pour bien saisir les liens complexes qui unissent ces personnages, et enfin pour savourer le goût de cendres qui se dégage de ce pavé, lorsque la dernière page tournée, il ne reste plus que vous, face à votre pire juge : vous-même.
