I like historical fiction, historical fact, science fiction and fantasy. I've been rereading some of my favorites and would also like to find more books by Indigenous, AAPI, Black, and other underrepresented authors.

Ilyasah Shabazz, Tiffany D. Jackson: The Awakening of Malcolm X (Hardcover, 2021, Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR)) 4 stars

Excellent book, fantastic narration

5 stars

I actually had to sit with this for a while, after absorbing the book. It covers the life of Malcolm X, concentrating on his time in prison. The author explains that some of the story has been edited for the drama or the flow of the story, and I appreciate that the facts can get in the way of a good story. :)

The narration and voices are very well done and compelling. I could hear the different voices and ethnicities represented.

Jeanne Larsen: Silk Road (2009, iUniverse, Incorporated) 5 stars

Re-reading was a joy

5 stars

I read this a few decades ago when my mother had it and recommended it to me. I enjoyed it then and was delighted to enjoy it again. The story is set in eighth-century China, and covers the protagonist through a journey from the border to the capital. It's not linear, and the style and narrator change throughout.

The author, Jeanne Larsen, is a scholar of Chinese history and literature. She intersperses the main character's story with myths and stories and magic. I had a really good time reading this, and was stoked to learn there are two more books on the same theme.

Erika L. Sanchez: I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter (2017, Alfred A Knopf Inc., an imprint of Random House Children's Books) 5 stars

Perfect Mexican daughters do not go away to college. And they do not move out …

A good, messy read.
