First of all, I'm not the target demographic for this book!
I got it as part of the Humble Audiobook Bundle and gave it a chance as I generally enjoy reinterpretations of mythological themes - and this is based on the tale of Persephone and Hades.

I found the protagonist, Pierce, to be infuriatingly clueless - a large part of the book is her doing some variation on "how should I know?" and "what have I done to deserve this?". And I get no real sense of development on her part, she comes to some realizations along the way but mostly by being beaten severely with the clue bat.

As the book is narrated by Pierce herself there are a number of times where things from her past are alluded to in the manner of "this thing that happened with ..." followed by small hints and clues until a full picture emerged. I understand the idea of keeping the readers hooked by not spoon feeding them everything right off the bat, but it felt overused to me, and started to grind.

I found the relationship between Pierce and John to be immensely frustrating... She has somehow figured out that he's some kind of bigshot in the underworld/"Death Deity". And yet she still reacts to him as if he was a run of the mill teen age boy. I can understand being insecure or confused about meeting a supernatural being, but just deciding that he's a "big jerk" seems rather off to me.
