Ah, I'd read this book during my post graduation, upon the suggestion of a friend. To be honest, the book put me in a shock-like state.
I didn't know what I felt like after put it down. I definitely cried it out, as it was a really depressing read.
It ends with a passionate scene, and after I read it, I was subconsciously meditating on the sex scene, while my eyes swelled with tears. This reaction, I never had for any other book.
Arundhati has a knack to pen the most heart-wrenching scene in a subtly-comic manner. She writes, "Mammachi was almost blind and always wore dark glasses when she went out of the house. Her tears trickled down from behind them and trembled along her jaw like raindrops on the edge of a roof. " Comical given the intensity of the scene.
Anyhoo, I'm yet to read the sequel, and was moments away from acquiring a copy, when we realised that it was a bit on the expensive side, and hence began looking for a hand-me-down copy, which we didn't find. So, another day, then!
