It was recommended in a travel guide to France as a classic novel of Paris. I had forgotten, however, how slow-going 19th-century novels can be (it has been a LONG time since I attempted one). The first 50 pages were all description and no plot. But after that, it did get interesting, and it did give me a good perspective on that age of French society.
