I'm primarily a fantasy enthusiast though you might occasionally spot me reading something else. Here to keep track of and sometimes comment upon the books I read.

re-read this series and caught up to it now that it's finished. the ending felt a little rushed, which I saw somewhere was because the series wasn't selling well which is unfortunate, it's really nice to see a heavily traumatized explicitly autistic perspective told without trying to sand down the rough edges.
(this is another series that's suffered from a butchered title translation. the japanese title is [directly translated] Asper Girl & given the themes of the story and just generally changing that to "that's my atypical girl" sucks)

whoaa coming of age love triangle with a nonbinary protagonist? I'm not sure I've ever seen that before. I didn't realize how much I needed to see that until now and I'm not even that much of a fan of love triangle stories. will post a full review in a moment :>
edit: I wrong a 12 paragraph long review about my feelings about this series but bookcrastinating logged me out somewhere in the middle so I lost it when I hit post. rip me I am NOT writing that again.
in summary it's a nice story that has nice discussions about gender. Asks a lot of good questions but ends up coming the wrong conclusions (people would rather die than choose a gender means make people more comfortable choosing one rather than perhaps address the issue of forcing people to choose a gender in the first place.)

It's hard to put into words how this series has made me feel. Confused? a little empty? Just saying it's a bad story doesn't feel right but I'm left unsatisfied finishing it. Perhaps it's that I was sold on it being a trans/non-binary story but. it's really not. Yuu has a complicated relationship with gender sure but if anything it feels more like the other characters & even the narrative put a lot more genderqueerness onto him that doesn't exist. And the only thing that makes them do so is that he's a male actor playing female roles. I dunno, it just feels very clumsily written without any real understanding of what it's like to be trans. Which I don't like to say because there's an infinite amount of ways to be trans and I know there are people this series resonates with. But that IS how it's left me feeling.
Going past the not really trans stuff the trauma also feels clumsily handled, or at least not explored very deeply. To be fair, this is a really short series and it doesn't have a lot of time to explore things but. Yeah I don't know.
I have my guard up pretty high with stories that tie gender non conformity to childhood trauma but that doesn't mean those stories shouldn't exist. it's just a nuanced topic that I don't think this manga does justice to.
tldr. I wouldn't recommend Boy meets Maria

Asked yonah for a recc and got this series. I'm enjoying it, I didn't realize it was by the same author as Kuroko's Basketball when I was reading but that does check out & I really liked Kuroko's too.

Read this over the weekend & enjoyed it a lot! I was looking for something to read so tried out the first couple chapters of a few random series and this was the third one (third time really is the charm). I enjoy these kinds of competitive non-sport manga and I love to see ones that dive into specific cultural traditions. The art of the series really suited the theme, the stylized exaggerated expressions really sold what the story was trying to show. I did have a bit of trouble following the hierarchies and structures (of like. who was in which school. what schools were at odds with each other and why. ect. especially since a lot of them are at odds with something they're also a part of? and that's never explained outright. looking it up on the wiki cleared it up though). considering if I want to add …

considering if I want to add this to my collection goals? I'd probably want to get it in japanese if I do.

Cute concept but there are so many things about this series which suck. The pacing is all over the place, the love interest is a jerk (I like awkward bad at communicating love interests as much as the next guy, but this one is just an asshole), the whole fake marriage is extremely contrived (and the bar is LOW for what I'll suspend my disbelief for), and all the side characters are really shallowly written

One of those competitive shounen manga, the same kind of format a sports manga would be except about the creative process. Always fun to read as an artist. Gorgeous visuals too, thought this is one of the rare times I'm reading a black and white comic where I wish it was in color. Color is so important to this series and mentioned so often... I wish at least the final make-up reveals got color pages.

There are lots of great quotes in this book of course, sharing this one bc it's probably not intended to be quite as entertaining as it is to me, personally.

Technically I've read this before, but it was in the form of listening to it as an audiobook playing while on a road trip with my father. The thing about consuming any sort of media with my dad is I'm going to miss parts of it when he doesn't wait for me and the thing about audiobooks is I'm going to miss parts of them as I zone out. This time I'll hopefully get the full experiance :)
