A moving story set post WW I. The protagonist is Tom, a young man with deep emotional scars from his time in the trenches. On his return to Australia, he becomes a lighthouse keeper on a very remote island. Falling in love during shore leave, his wife Isabel joins him. Life would be perfect if Isabel was able to bear their child, as she keeps miscarrying. One day, a boat strands on the island, bearing a dead man and a baby...

Beautifully written, The Light Between Oceans is a story about broken people making the wrong decisions repeatedly, for love. At times it's a bit hard to bear any sympathy for Tom and Isabel. I enjoyed the writing though, and at the end, I was emotionally moved to tears which doesn't happen that often for me.
