I loved this book! The premise was very interesting to me, playing with the superheroes trope. How about having a world with superheroes in it, in this case people called EOs, extra-ordinaries. How about those EOs not actually being good guys, but also not your stereotypical superhero-villain? Or maybe they are? Hard to tell, that's how grey the characters are.

Though there are differing PoVs, we spend most of our time with Victor Vale, an arrogant, intelligent college student at a fictitious college. He and his roommate Eli excel at everything they touch, but Eli is the shining star. It is Eli who wants to write a thesis on EOs being the result of a near-death experience. Victor doesn't want to be outclassed by Eli and suggests they try their own near-death experience, which ultimately ruins their friendship forever...

So who's the hero in this story, and who's the villain? I seriously couldn't tell you, they're all fucked up.
