W. E. B. Du Bois: Darkwater (1999, Dover Publications) No rating

Just finished the "Jesus Christ in Texas" story and it felt like a good stop for the moment. I am again struck by how contemporary and powerful his writing remains. There's been a couple of Black Jesus stories so far, and they've really made me more understanding and aware of how Black JC isn't just pure physical representation but also manifests specific needs of the Black faithful. I'm reminded that I have Obery Hendricks' "Christians Against Christianity" to read still, which likely touches on similar ideas. It's revealing, I think, how much truer this Black form of Christianity feels to His teachings, though sad that it's the "religion of the oppressed" aspect that's most resonant.

Mark Z. Danielewski: House of Leaves (Hardcover, 2006, Pantheon) 5 stars

A young family moves into a small home on Ash Tree Lane where they discover …

My favorite book, I must have bought this one in various editions a half-dozen times, always giving them away to people! Endlessly fascinating in story and construction, Johnny's encounter with the House remains a compelling expression of our post-modern angst at being doomed by a system/environment that is hostile yet indifferent to us, confusing and beyond our ability to make meaning from it.
