I'm still shocked at how much confidence tech folks have in AI code helpers. It's like having a super junior programmer with you with inhuman availability for whenever you want to work. That said...
- They may strike oil every so often, but more often they'll make mistakes, IME
- If left unmonitored, small mistakes will snowball into, I dunno, something like the SolarWinds breach.
- If it is sentient (unlikely), it is being exploited beyond all reason by those at the top and training it adds fuel to that bonfire.
- If it is not sentient (almost certainly), training it is like paying for the privilege to sharpen someone else's tool.
- Helping another human builds relationships, helping an AI does not. It does not retain that context beyond the scope of that conversation.
... I could go on, but this whole trend continues to exhaust me.

Data workers, for their part, have formed collectives to fight back against platforms and their worst excesses. In Kenya, Daniel Motaung and 150 workers convened in Nairobi in mid-2023 to form the African Content Moderators Union, which is one of the first unions of content moderators and data workers worldwide. Motaung was fired from Sama, the contractor providing Facebook (and, previously, OpenAl) with content moderation and other data work, for his organizing efforts, and is now suing Facebook and Sama in Kenyan court.

You may now add me to the list of FOSS folks directly impacted by unethical AI scraping effectively performing Denial of Service attacks.
My wife informed me this morning that our billing system had been knocked offline.
The reason? #Amazon, #OpenAI, and similar bot scraping traffic blew up my access logs to the point of filling that server's entire drive. They're constantly scraping and re-scraping my FreeBSD wiki.

You can hardly find a studio the works of which are so thoughtful, kind, and intentional as Studio Ghibli. To stripmine that for its aesthetics, to take a piece of cardboard and paint it like food and say "See, doesn't this taste just as good?" is more than missing the point, it's barbaric, dystopian. It's an insult to life itself. #OpenAI

"Watch out, fiction writers. OpenAI may have you in its crosshairs.
In a post on X on Tuesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that the company has trained a “new model” that’s “really good” at creative writing."
Which means they trained it on stolen work from fiction writers.
The #UK government plans to allow #AI companies train their #LLMs on copyrighted music without permission. Artists today release a silent album as part of their protest. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2025/feb/25/kate-bush-damon-albarn-1000-artists-silent-ai-protest-album-copyright #OpenAI #Chatgpt
So The Guardian, Defender of Independent #Journalism, is partnering with #OpenAI. Presumably to finally get paid for all the data that has already been scraped from their site. But also to 'roll out #ChatGPT Enterprise', allowing their readership to 'benefit from advanced #AI technology'.
I am not sure I can yet voice everything that is deeply wrong with this. So for now, here is the link to the press release.

Meanwhile, I’m one of 100+ #Guardian journalists whose employment will be terminated next month. On Friday, the organisation signed a deal with #OpenAI. If you find my (human!) work of value, I’d be grateful if you shared this and consider upgrading to paid. With enormous thanks to the 50,000 people who have signed up so far. I so appreciate it, Carole
