#writersCoffeeClub 27th of October: recommend a book that had an impact on your prose.
Terry #Pratchett in particular, especially his love of footnotes.
(Does anyone know why he largely stopped using footnotes in his later works? I have always wondered...)
"The Wee Free Men" by Terry Pratchett is a guide to resisting tyranny disguised as a YA book.
The Queen of the Elves is an unquestioned authoritiy figure in her world, but she doesn't accept responsibility. She makes everyone entertain her, and discards them (terminally) if they displease her. Nothing in her world is real, because she has no imagination. She steals from other worlds and doesn't care for anything once she's gotten what she wants. You don't grow old there, not quickly, anyway, because nothing grows, learns, builds, or even imagines anything new. They're there to convince the Queen that she's somehow all-powerful as well as carefree, fun, and infallible.
The Queen of the Elves is a malignant narcissist, like all tyrants. As usual, Terry Pratchett was preparing us for the worst of the real world, and he somehow made it fun. #Discworld #Pratchett

... Unser Glaube daran!

GNU Terry Pratchett. 10 years gone but never forgotten. Looking around this corner of the internet I see people starting their Discworld journeys for the first time. I see long time readers finding each other. I see friends who started as fellow fans. He changed so many lives. Thank you Terry. I'll raise a toast today on your birthday. A man is not dead while is name is still spoken, or until the ripples he left in the world fade.

“What a place! What a situation! What kind of man would put a known criminal in charge of a major branch of government? Apart from, say, the average voter.”

Terry Pratchett interview in Adventurer 11 (June/July 1987)
Adventurer was a rather short running UK RPG magazine. In the last issue, Adventurer 11, June/July 1987, there was an interesting interview with Terry Pratchett, where he recounted his experiences with D&D (he used to play and early Discworld has at least some influences from that) and why he stopped.
My favorite part is this one:
I gained marvellous insight into human nature one day when I introduced the concept of D&D to six ladies who worked in the tele-ads department of a local newspaper for which I was working-They cottoned on to the idea fairly quickly, so I gave them a little scenario which I’d been round backwards and forwards and upside down. They got one central idea torture everyone you meet and grab everything you can. It was a beautiful scenario. There were goodies, baddies, people on …

They got one central idea torture everyone you meet and grab everything you can. It was a beautiful scenario. There were goodies, baddies, people on your side, monsters. They didn’t care. They just marched in and killed everybody. It didn’t matter to them if their victims were lying there, half-dead. An hour into the game and the air was smoking over the table-they were kicking doors down, no advancing carefully down passages-they ran, swords out. There was one monster which was nearly impossible to kill. They were supposed to find a secret device to help, but they just stood round its cage and kept sticking their swords in. Eventually its hit points came down from one billion trillion to something you could deal with, and they were quite prepared to stand there all day prodding it!The dice rolls were all in their favour and I as DM just gave up. If they couldn’t understand what something was. they threw it away. Out went various clues, secret keys, parchments, but any recognisable treasure went into the sack. And out they went, with two trolls and one zombie they’d made into beasts of burden. It was the first time anyone had ever raped a dungeon. There was nothing left.

Today's Terry Pratchett Quote:
"People on the side of The People always ended up disappointed, in any case. They found that The People tended not to be grateful or appreciative or forward-thinking or obedient. The People tended to be small-minded and conservative and not very clever and were even distrustful of cleverness. (1/2)
