In 1939, as Poland falls under the shadow of the Nazis, young Alma Belasco's parents send her away to live in safety with an aunt and uncle in their opulent mansion in San Francisco. There, as the rest of the world goes to war, she encounters Ichimei Fukuda, the quiet and gentle son of the family's Japanese gardener. Unnoticed by those around them, a tender love affair begins to blossom. Fluffy 20th century novel

4 stars

As I become older, I apparently care more for fluff, and this story has plenty. it's a family saga, of Alma Belasco who fled from Poland to San Francisco in 1939, and fell in love with the son of the Japanese gardener of the family. Wrapped around Alma's story we have the story of her caretaker Irina in Alma's later years at a nursing home.

I greatly enjoyed this but can see how it's not for everyone. It's a bit Pilcher-y.

When the main character is barely the main character

Irina is a care worker who serves as a vessel of receiving Alma's story. I wish Irina was just taken out of the picture, I did not care for her sub-plot at all. Really, all I cared about was Alma and Ichimei's romantic love story.

A part of me also takes the title of this book into question. I suspect it might not be as egregious in the original language, maybe?
