Lahore, Pakistan. Then. Misbah is a dreamer and storyteller, newly married to Toufiq in an arranged match. After their young life is shaken by tragedy, they come to the United States and open the Clouds’ Rest Inn Motel, hoping for a new start.

What an astonishing, moving, beautiful book. Three stories, expertly woven together, to tell a tale of pain, harm, loss, suffering and redemption.

Tahir was the fabled singer, All My Rage her song. I feel quite broken, cracked open and vulnerable, after reading parts of my life on her pages. A lot to think about and process. I haven't cried for two characters (and myself) like this for a long time.

Noor and Salahudin's story will stay with me for a long, long time.

I do think this is reward material. This contemporary novel takes us to Pakistan and the edge of the Mojave desert, telling different stories about the experiences of immigrants to the States and the desires alternatively to lose or retain one's culture. Foods, aromas and the odd cup of chai round off a rich and vibrant experience.
