Ambitious New York City teenager Craig Gilner is determined to succeed at life - which means getting into the right high school to get into the right job. But once Craig aces his way into Manhattan's Executive Pre-Professional High School, the pressure becomes unbearable. He stops eating and sleeping until, one night, he nearly kills himself.

Craig's suicidal episode gets him checked into a mental hospital, where his new neighbors include a transsexual sex addict, a girl who has scarred her own face with scissors, and the self-elected President Armelio. There, Craig is finally able to confront the sources of his anxiety.

Ned Vizzini, who himself spent time in a psychiatric hospital, has created a remarkably moving tale about the sometimes unexpected road to happiness

Review of "It's Kind of a Funny Story" on 'Goodreads'

This book is so lovely. Craig is so relatable. He's a depressive guy with so many thoughts alike anyone alive, it's great. He feels so much. He's so anxious about life. He's a really good guy with too many thoughts about life and it's exactly like a teenager feels all the time, worried, anxious, scared, depressed... Craig is so real. That's what makes him so good.

Then we have Noelle, who is really scarred girl, a she's just so simple and authentic you like her as soon as she appears. Then Humble, who is such a nice guy in reality but really ill... And Bobby, who wants to get better and get a place to live, take back a life he never had. And Muqtada, who doesn't even feel the need to get up, who is so beaten up by life that he just wants to give up.

The ending …
