Not Amor’s Best

3 stars

This wasn’t my favorite novel by Amor (that would be the exceptional White Pines), but I can appreciate that she tried something new and must also acknowledge that I am not a part of the demographic this was written for.

If I had to nail down why this didn’t work for me, I’d say that the first 2/3 of the book seemed a little repetitive and perhaps even unnecessary to the story. The scenes with lab workers grew increasingly tiresome, while the identity of Maggie’s therapist—one of the central mysteries of the story—was pretty easily deciphered.

A new work by Gemma Amor is always a reason for rejoicing; even so, this one was a little disappointing.
