What in the patriarchal nonsense
2 stars
It gets two stars instead of one because of the mom's apology and explanation, but holy shit, this book was terrible.
The characters/style of prose fell very flat for me. The narrators didn't do a great job describing any feelings of tension, so all the intimacy seemed like it was just dropped into the middle of the plot with no fanfare. The big four-letter-word reveal at the end had no tension around it whatsoever - the FL tells the ML she loves him in the middle of an explanation and it goes completely uncommented.
And holy shit! The supporting characters!!! You cannot tell me for an entire book how the FL's mom won't listen to her in any conversation and is being pushy beyond reality, and then expect me to forgive her because she explained she ruled out a bunch of other men for practical reasons. Every time the big sister opened her mouth I wanted to slap her because of how awful she was to the FL, and that just got glossed over as "she's having marriage problems, go easy on her." And no wonder the entire cast acts so inappropriately about other people's lives and marriages, when nobody will even mention to the nieces that being pushy about someone else's relationship is rude.
Also, there were SO MANY KIDS in this book. This is probably coloring my review, children and babies are an ick for me, but we got to see a lot of immature kid arguments and screaming babies and I struggled with that as well.
On top of it all, it was poorly copy-edited; at least two obvious typos stuck out to me in the kindle edition.
No, I think I'm done with this author, thanks.
